Some time ago I made a video about the verbs MUDAR and TROCAR just with examples. Now, in this blog post, I want to give some explanations and synonyms, too.
Before you start reading about MUDAR and TROCAR below, here are a couple of things you need to know:
- Some times these two verbs can be used to talk about the same thing, but with different meanings. Check these sentences: eles mudaram para uma casa maior and eles trocaram de casa. They are both talking houses and changes, but with different meanings… you’ll read the difference below. 😉
- Always pay attention to the use of prepositions. In some situations you’ll use only the verb (mudar or trocar), in others you’ll need de, or por, etc.
Mudar
Mudar is about changes both physically and psychologically, but less used with the idea of exchange. Mudar is also the verb used when you want to say that you are going to live in another house, city, or country: Eles mudaram para uma casa maior.
Some synonyms for mudar: alterar, modificar, redirecionar, redefinir, reorientar.
Here you have some examples, uses, and translation. You’ll notice that in many phrases mudar is used as change, but it’s not in all of them.
• A: Mudei de ideia, vou querer sorvete de abacaxi, por favor.
Mudar de ideia – to change one’s mind
• A: O tempo mudou hoje, está muito frio!
B: Então vamos ter que mudar nossos planos… vamos ter que ficar em casa! 🙁
Mudar o tempo – change the weather
Mudar os planos – to change one’s plans.
• As coisas não mudam nunca neste país. Entra político, sai político e tudo continua igual.
As coisas não mudam nunca – things never change.
• Depois que os filhos nasceram, eles decidiram mudar a decoração da casa.
Mudar a decoração da casa – to change home decor.
• Eles se mudaram de São Paulo para Campinas. Eles mudaram para uma casa maior.
Mudar de casa – to move house
Mudar-se de (um lugar para outro) – to move from one place to another
• Ela mudou muito depois da faculdade. Antes era calada e depois ficou falante e comunicativa.
Mudar o jeito (de ser) – to become a different person in a positive or negative way (transform).
• Preciso mudar de emprego logo, o meu está ficando chato.
Mudar de emprego, de trabalho – to change jobs/to change one’s job
• A: Vamos mudar de assunto antes que alguém fique nervoso.
Mudar de assunto – to change the subject
Trocar
Trocar is about exchanging, substituting, or replacing. Some of the examples you’ll read below are translated to English with the word “change”.
• A: Comprei uma camiseta linda, mas quando cheguei em casa, vi que estava furada e precisei trocar.
Trocar alguma coisa por outra – to change something for something else
• Quero trocar de apartamento, aqui não pega muito sol e os vizinhos são barulhentos.
Trocar de carro, de casa, de apartamento – to buy a new car, house, etc leaving the old one as part of payment.
• Troquei a lâmpada da sala há uma semana e já queimou de novo! Vou ter que comprar mais uma lâmpada.
Trocar as lâmpadas queimadas – to replace the burned out bulb.
• Meus avós sempre trocavam os nomes de todos os netos.
Trocar o nome das pessoas – to confuse people’s names.
• Maria Rita é colecionadora de álbuns e figurinhas, ela gosta de trocar figurinha com os amigos da escola.
Trocar figurinhas – literal meaning: to swap stickers;
Como sou professora, gosto de trocar figurinha com outros professores: gosto de saber como eles trabalham e como eles lidam com situações difíceis.
Trocar figurinhas – figurative meaning: to exchange ideas.
• Quando viajo para fora do país preciso trocar o dinheiro.
Trocar dinheiro – to exchange currency
• Faz 5 minutos que trocaram o bebê e ele já se sujou de novo.
Trocar o bebê – to change the baby
• É bom trocar a roupa de cama com frequência.
Trocar a roupa de cama – to change sheets
• Tenho que me trocar rápido pra sair!
Trocar-se – to change clothes
• Para ir até o Porto, preciso trocar de trem em Coimbra.
Trocar de trem, de ônibus, etc – to change trains, buses, etc.
• Elas gostam de se encontrar com outro empreendedores para trocarem ideias.

How do you learn this kind of vocabulary?
This is something important not only for these two verbs, but for everything related to vocabulary in any language you want to learn. You have to be very careful with direct translation because it may lead you to mistakes. As mudar and trocar, there isn’t a fixed meaning for each of them. You just can’t say mudar means xxx and trocar means xxx because it won’t work and you’ll end up saying funny things😅.
Learn these words as part of collocations! When you study, write down (or memorize, or say out loud) the whole collocation, not only one word with one meaning.
Practice with exercises (as the one below), pay attention when you see a collocation with them, read carefully, and check what’s around these words.
